This is part of a series of kids talks I’m doing in the morning service at Banstead Community Church based on the New City Catechism.
Big Question #29 – Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through faith alone, where does this faith come from? [NCC Q35]
Powerpoint Pictures: Present; Letters of FAITH jumbled up on a slide
Children, what’s the best thing about having a birthday or Christmas?
Now, imagine that one of the gifts you get for your birthday, is a gift that changes your life forever.
Once you opened the gift you will never be the same again.
Inside this wrapped up box is a life changing gift.
Shall we open it up?
It’s some jumbled up letters.
How can some jumbled up letters be a life changing gift?
Well, I wonder if you can put them in the right order to spell a word. Can you tell me what word those letters spell out?
Faith is a wonderful gift. That’s what one of the big questions that the Bible answers tells us.
Do you remember the answer to that big question, “How can we be saved?” It was, only by faith in Jesus Christ and in his substitutionary atoning death on the cross.
Faith in Jesus saves us from our sins and the punishment of hell we deserve for them. Isn’t that good news?
But where does faith come from? Can we find it inside us? Can we buy it from a shop?
The Bible tells us that faith is a gift which has to be given to us, and our next big question tells us who gives this wonderful gift.
Let’s look at it now.
Q: Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through faith alone, where does this faith come from?
Listen to what God’s Word tells us.
“For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift.” (Ephesians 2:8)
Faith is a gift from God.
“But when the kindness of God our Saviour and his love for mankind appeared, he saved us – not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy – through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” (Titus 3:4-5)
Now there are lots of complex words in those verses, but this is what they are saying. Faith is a gift from God which is given to us by the Holy Spirit, and when this gift is given it changes us inside. We are able to trust in Jesus to save us. But also, our sin is washed away and we made into new people who are now part of God’s family.
And this change inside us causes us to start loving what Jesus loves and hating what He hates, choosing what Christ would choose, and think and feeling how He would think and feel about things.
The gift of faith which the Holy Spirit gives to people is a wonderful gift.
If we have not yet received this gift, do you know what the best thing we can do is? It is to pray to God that His Holy Spirit would give us the gift of faith so we can trust in Jesus and be saved. We can do that right now. This is also a good prayer to pray for other people too – that the Holy Spirit would give them the gift of faith so they can trust in Jesus and be saved.
So back to our big question.
Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through faith alone, where does this faith come from?
What’s the answer?
A: From the Holy Spirit.
Well, let’s say the question and answer together to help us to remember this.
Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through faith alone, where does this faith come from? From the Holy Spirit.
