The Big Read – Daniel
Powerpoint Pictures: Dreams, Number 4, Vegetables, Fire, Lion
Can you guess what the book of the Bible is from these clues?
Of course it is Daniel.
How many clues did you need to guess the Bible book?
The book of Daniel has some of the most popular stories.
But it is more than a book of exciting stories. It is a book to encourage us to keep following Jesus in a world when most of the people around us don’t follow Him.
How does the book do this?
By showing us a God who reveals.
Daniel and his friends are given by God knowledge and understanding. God reveals the meaning of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream to Daniel. Later Daniel has the future revealed to him. Not just Israel’s history, but where all of history is heading, with some being raised to everlasting life and others to everlasting contempt.
It is worth following Jesus, because He reveals to us what the future is and for who stick with Him it will be glorious.
By showing us a God who rescues.
He rescues Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from the fiery furnace and Daniel from the lion’s den.
It is worth following Jesus, because He rescues us. He saves us from our sin and the punishment we deserve.
And by showing us a God who rules.
He humbles two proud Babylonian kings leaving them in no doubt who is in control.
It is worth following Jesus, because He rules.
“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshipped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.” (Daniel 7:13-14)
Jesus is the one like a son of man who has been given an everlasting kingdom.
Through the stories and visions we read about in Daniel, God tells us what He is like – that He rules, rescues, and reveals – and gives us good reasons to keep following Jesus.
