“Lord, there is no one like you. You are great; your name is great in power.” (Jeremiah 10:6)
Jeremiah encourages the people of Israel to remain faithful to the God of Israel and serve and worship Him only. Why? Because He is incomparable. As Matthew Henry comments, “whatever people may set up as rivals to him, there is none that can compare with him.”
He notes that the nations have made gods of their heroes because of their wisdom (philosophers such as Apollo or Hermes) or their dominion (kings such as Saturn or Jupiter) but these do not compare with God.
“What is the glory of a human being who devised a useful skill or founded a flourishing kingdom—and this was a sufficient basis among the nations to entitle someone to the status of a god—compared with the glory of the One who is the Creator of the world and who forms the spirit of man within him?”
“What is the glory of the greatest ruler or power compared with the glory of the One whose kingdom rules over all?”
There is no greater reality than God Himself.
