Mary’s song is one of the most popular songs that have been sung in churches for hundreds of years. It’s is the first Christmas carol and it’s a good one because it is all about God, what He is like, and what He has done.
After the Angel Gabriel announced to her that she would be the mother of God’s Son, the King who has come to rescue, Mary visited her relative Elizabeth where she composed this song.
In this song Mary praises God because of who He is and what He’s done.
“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour…the Mighty One has done great things for me – holy is his name.” (Luke 1:47, 49)
She calls God her Saviour who has done great things for me. One of those great things has to be choosing her to be the mother of God’s Saviour King.
“His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.” (Luke 1:50)
She says God is merciful to those who fear Him. That is certainly true. We know that God is merciful to people who come to Him and trust in the Son that Mary was to give birth to, who demonstrated God’s mercy to us when He died on the cross for us.
Like Mary, it is good for us to praise God for His saving mercy and the great things He has done, the greatest being sending Jesus into the world to save sinners. At this time of year, when we remember Jesus’ birth, and we see the images of Jesus in the crib, we mustn’t forget that the reason Jesus was in the crib was so He could go to the cross.
Let’s praise Him now as we pray.
