What about a message that comes from God?
One type of message that comes from God is called a prophecy. One man who received a prophecy from God was Zechariah.
Zechariah was married to Elizabeth, and in their old age, Elizabeth became pregnant with a son who they named John. John would grow up to do a special job for God.
After John was born, Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and began prophesying. The first part of the prophecy that God gave Zechariah was all about what God had done.
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemed his people.” (Luke 1:68)
Zechariah was praising God because He had come to rescue His people.
This was something that God had promised to do hundreds of years earlier, and Zechariah was praising God because it was happening right now. God’s rescue plan involved a messenger coming to prepare the people for the arrival of the Saviour.
And Zechariah says in the second part of his prophecy that this messenger was his son John.
“And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins.” (Luke 1:76-77)
Zechariah says that John, his son, will be the promised messenger that God would send to tell his people that they needed to get ready for the rescue of having their sins forgiven. Sin is something everyone does. It’s when we do what we want, instead of what God wants. Sin stops us being friends with God which is why people like us need to have our sins forgiven.
John’s birth means that God is keeping his promise to rescue His people. That is why Zechariah can praise God for coming to save His people.
Christmas is good time for us to praise God, like Zechariah did, for coming to save people by forgiving their sins.
We know that when John grew up he did tell people to get ready for Jesus. He told them to do this by repenting of their sin. John was the messenger God had promised.
We know that after John came the promised Saviour Jesus who when He grew up died on the cross taking the punishment that we deserve for our sin so that God can forgive us. But Jesus didn’t stay dead, God brought Him back to life and today He is ruling as King of everything.
Therefore we should praise God for His rescue, but not only that. We should repent and ask God to forgive us because we are sinners and we should also trust in Jesus and His death and resurrection to make possible for God to forgive us.
