Here are some random thoughts about youth groups socials as part of a church’s youth ministry:
- They are not evangelism – although in conversations that take place during them there might be opportunities to share the gospel.
- It’s okay for Christian young people to have fun playing danish longball or some crazy water games.
- They are a chance for youth leaders to observe whether the young people are applying the Bible teaching – a competitive game of football can show whether they’ve grasped loving one another.
- Don’t expect to beat the world at providing entertainment – but that doesn’t mean you should do rubbish socials.
- Don’t do them to try and make Christians look normal to the world – we’re supposed to be different.
- Don’t do them because parents are putting pressure on you to socialise their kids for them.
- It’s natural for Christian parents to want a safe environment for their kids to meet one another, but that is not a reason in itself to do them.
- Get parents involved!
