Field Notes – 12/8/S
We’re planning on showing Luther: The Life and Legacy of the German Reformer at Banstead Community Church at the end of October. Here’s a nice review of it with some suggestions of different ways churches could use it.
If you’re a fan of singing the Psalms, you might like this collection of 10 Psalms from The Corner Room.
What are some of the benefits of pastors being part of a spiritual brotherhood?
- The Impartation of Experiential Wisdom Through Counsel: “Just as Christians cannot live the Christian life without one another, Gospel ministers cannot carry out Gospel ministry with care and skill without the aid of other Gospel ministers.”
- The Exchange of Valuable Theological Resources: “Over the years brothers in ministry have shared a seemingly immeasurable number of books, articles, sermons, essays, and blog posts with me.”
- The Extension of Ministerial Outreach and Visitation: “There have been many times when a pastor has called and asked me to reach out to one of their family members or former church members who have moved to our town. When we are living in loving spiritual fellowship with other men in ministry, we have the opportunity to share in the work of the Kingdom of God with them–even when we are separated by geographical limitations.”
“Recently we took a group of visitors from out of town 26 miles offshore to fish. We didn’t catch anything and got pretty beat up in big waves. They asked me, “Do you often go fishing and come home with nothing?” The answer is, “Yes.” They looked surprised. But we don’t sell our boats and fishing gear just because we come home empty handed. We say, “That’s why they call it fishin’ not catchin’!” I know I won’t always come home with tons of fish every time I go. But I also know I won’t catch anything sitting on the couch at home watching YouTube videos of other people fishing or reading a book about fishing. I actually have to go fishing.” (Donnie Griggs)
