Where do we find curtains? [In rooms of our house; Shower; Changing rooms; Theatre; Around bed; Hiding a plaque]
Why do we have curtains? To stop us seeing either in or out.
Now in the temple in Jerusalem, there was a huge curtain that separated the Most Holy Place (the place where God lived amongst His people) from the rest of the temple. Only the High Priest was allowed to go into the Most Holy Place and was only allowed to go in there once a year.
When Jesus died, as well as darkness coming over the land, something happened to the curtain in the temple.
“The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” (Mark 15:38)
At the moment Jesus died, the curtain that separated people from God was torn in two. There was now nothing to separate them from God. People, like the thief on the cross, could now be in a relationship with God if they believed in Jesus, because Jesus took the punishment they deserve for their sins, for all that they had done wrong.
And believe in Jesus is what someone who was watching Jesus die, did.
“When the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” (Mark 15:39)
Jesus is now dead. What will happen to His body?
