Harvest – Don’t be Mr Greedy
Idea for the kids talk came from a sermon by Nathan Howard on Leviticus 19:1-10.
Powerpoint Pictures: Mr Greedy
Who is this? It’s Mr Greedy.
Mr Greedy was someone who was very greedy. He loved eating lots and lots of food.
One day Mr Greedy, after waking up early and having the biggest breakfast ever, went for a long walk and discovered a cave.
In the cave everything was big including a big table with a big plate of big food on it. A big plate with big sausages the size of pillows, big potatoes the size of beach balls, and big peas the size of cabbages, and Mr Greedy being greedy began to eat.
Suddenly a Giant (whose cave it was) picked up Mr Greedy. The Giant decided to teach Mr Greedy a lesson for being so greedy by making him eat up everything on the plate. When Mr Greedy had finished he felt very ill. The Giant said he would only let Mr Greedy go if he promised to never be greedy again. Mr Greedy kept his promise.
Sometimes we can be like Mr Greedy, which is why God has given us a good rule to follow.
“When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of the harvest… Leave them for the poor. I am the LORD your God.” (Leviticus 19:9-10)
God says to us “Don’t be greedy… be generous.”
We don’t own fields today, but we can be generous with what we do have, and help those who are poor and in need.
Harvest time is a brilliant time when we can do this by giving food or money to those who are less fortunate than us.
Now when we find this hard to do, the end of the verse tells us to remember something. “Leave them for the poor. I am the LORD your God.” (Leviticus 19:10)
We are to remember who God is.
We are to remind ourselves that God has been so generous to us by sending His Son the Lord Jesus to be our Saviour by dying on the cross for our sins so that we can be forgiven.
One of the ways we can say thank you to God for being so generous to us, is by obeying His Word which says to us “Don’t be greedy… be generous.”
