Harvest – One dies to give many life
Idea for the kids talk came from Jeremy Hobson.
Powerpoint Pictures: Tomato; Tomato Cut in Half; Tomato Plant
Hold up a tomato. If I were to cut the tomato in half what would I see? I would see lots of seeds.
If I removed one of these seeds and I put it in my pocket, would anything happen to the seed? No, it would just stay as a seed.
Seeds on their own just stay as seeds.
But I could do something with a tomato seed. What could I do with it? I could plant it in a pot.
When you plant the seed in a pot, it looks like the seed is dead and gone. It has disappeared. But after a while something amazing happens. The seed grows into a plant which gets bigger and bigger and makes many, many seeds.
Can anyone guess how many seeds are in a tomato like this? [50-200 seeds]
From one tomato seed you get a plant that has lots of tomatoes each with between 50 and 200 seeds in them. From one seed you get thousands of tomato seeds.
From one seed comes lots of seeds. And it is only when that one seed seems to have died (as it is planted in the ground) that it brings lots of seeds to life.
In the Bible, Jesus says that He is like a seed. Listen to what He said:
“The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you the truth, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” (John 12:23=24)
Jesus was not talking about tomato seeds but Himself.
Like a seed is buried in the ground, so Jesus was going to be killed and buried. That’s what we remember at Easter.
Then like a seed, Jesus dying and being buried causes something amazing to happen. Just like the seed that made many seeds comes to life, Jesus brings many people to life, not just hundreds, but millions and millions of people. Everyone who trusts in Jesus will have eternal life and live with Him forever in heaven.
It is only when a seed seems to have died that it gives life to lots and lots of seeds, and like a seed, Jesus’ death gives life, eternal life, to lots and lots of people.
At harvest time we have lots to thank God for: the seeds that grow and give us food to eat, and Jesus who gives eternal life to people who trust in Him.
