Harvest – Why do we celebrate harvest?
Powerpoint Pictures: Party scene; Tent
I want you to have a look at the following two pictures, because these two pictures tell us why we celebrate harvest.
The first picture is of a party. The second picture is of a tent.
These pictures are of two things that God told His people the Israelites to do at the very first harvest festival called the Feast of the Tabernacles.
This is what God said to His people:
“Celebrate this as a festival to the LORD for seven days each year… Live in booths for seven days: All native-born Israelites are to live in booths so that your descendants will know that I made the Israelites live in booths when I brought them out of Egypt.” (Leviticus 23:41-43)
God told his people to do two things.
1) Party – to thank God for providing good things for them.
2) Pitch a tent – to remember that God rescued them from Egypt and on the way to the Promised Land they lived in temporary shelters.
Harvest was a time to thank God for providing and for rescuing.
And it still is today!
We should thank God for providing for our physical needs. We should also thank God that He has rescued us, not from Egypt, but from our sin by sending His Son the Lord Jesus.
