Can you think of the names for special meals you don’t have every day? [Takeaway; Afternoon Tea; Picnic; BBQ; Banquet]
I want to tell you about a time when a picnic turned into a banquet for many.
A huge crowd was listening to Jesus teaching and by the time He had finished it was late in the day and everyone was hungry.
But there was a problem.
There were no shops or burger vans to buy food from.
Yet Jesus turns to His disciples and says “You give them something to eat.” How were they going to do that?
One of the disciples said they had 5 loaves and 2 fish, but that was hardly going to feed a crowd. It wouldn’t feed all of us in this room, let alone a bigger crowd.
Listen to what Jesus did:
“Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve baskefuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.” (Mark 6:41-43)
Jesus broke up the 5 loaves and 2 fish and gave them to the disciples to start handing out to the crowd and somehow it fed not just 5 people or 10 people but 5000 men plus woman and children.
A picnic for 1 turned into a feast for thousands when put in Jesus’ hand.
Again we are being shown who Jesus is. That He is God Himself. Do you believe this to be true?
