Halloween – Trick or treat?
That’s the question you might get asked (tomorrow) night by a group of kids dressed up as different kinds of monsters, because (tomorrow) is Halloween. For the last few weeks the shops have been full of different Halloween things to buy. But is Halloween something we should take part in?
Is Halloween a trick or a treat?
Why might you think that Halloween is a treat? [Dressing up; Apple bobbing; Eating doughnuts on a string; Cutting a face out of a pumpkin]
But actually Halloween is a trick for two reasons:
1. Halloween tricks us into thinking that evil and evil things are not real.
Halloween can make us think that evil things like the devil are just made up characters like the Easter bunny and the tooth fairy.
The Bible teaches us that evil and evil things are real. The devil and demons do exist. They are angels who rebelled against God and who want us to rebel against God too.
2. Halloween tricks us into thinking that evil and evil things are really good.
As we get dressed up as witches and monsters, and have fun playing all the different games that take place at Halloween parties, you might start to think that these evil things aren’t that bad after all.
The Bible teaches that evil and evil things are bad. We are told that God will punish everything that is evil in a place called hell.
So is Halloween a trick or a treat?
Halloween is a TRICK and we should keep away from it!!
What about the good news in the Bible about Jesus? Is that a trick or a treat?
Listen to this verse from the Bible…
“Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15)
This verse is a trustworthy saying – it is not trying to trick us, it is telling us the truth.
This verse deserves full acceptance – we should believe it is true.
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners – that is great news!
It means that Jesus came to save us. He came to save us from our sin and the punishment of hell we deserve because we sin. Jesus did that when he died on the cross. On the cross he took the punishment we deserved. By saving us, we can now spend forever in a treat that is much better than sweet, which is living in heaven.
This treat is for everyone who is truly sorry for not living God’s way, who believes that Jesus died to save them, and who now tries with God’s help to live the way God wants them to.
