In the next part of the Big Bible Adventure someone hears a voice but they do not recognise who is speaking.
When Hannah prayed to God to give her a son she promised that if He did, she would give Him back to God, and when Samuel was old enough she kept her promise. She took Samuel to live in the temple with Eli the priest, and serve God there. For Samuel, this might have felt a bit like going to boarding school.
One night when Eli, who was getting old, had gone to bed, and Samuel was lying down in another room in the temple, God called Samuel. But Samuel didn’t know that it was God calling him. He thought it was Eli.
So Samuel ran into Eli’s room and said “Here I am, you called me.” But Eli hadn’t called Samuel and said to him “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So Samuel went and lay down again.
Again God called Samuel. Again Samuel thought it was Eli. Again Eli said it wasn’t him. The same thing then happened a third time. God called Samuel, Samuel thought it was Eli, and Eli said it wasn’t him. Eli though, recognised that it was God who was speaking to Samuel.
Eli said to Samuel: “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:9).
God then came again and called Samuel, and Samuel this time replied, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” And God spoke to Samuel about what he was going to do.
As Samuel grew up the people of Israel recognised that he was a prophet who God spoke through, and in the next part of the story, God is going to tell Samuel to do something very important!
